The NAT market includes clinical diagnostic infectious disease, cancer, and genetic testing as well as NAT-based blood donor screening (see Cancer/Genetic Testing). The infectious disease category includes, but is not limited to, tests for HIV, hepatitis, and STD infections as well as emerging tests for GBS, MRSA, and respiratory viral infections. The cancer subsegment includes HPV testing as well as PCR, FISH, and other technologies used for a variety of cancer types. Genetic testing includes, but is not limited to, CFTR, HLA, thrombophilia, chromosomal disorders, and pharmacogenetic testing.
NAT is currently performed in the laboratory setting and is just beginning to enter the POC setting. Future technology development efforts focus on automation and simplification of sample preparation and detection processes to allow for expanded POC testing.
